The Lion Rock: Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World
Rising nearly 200 meters from the central plains, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmark. This 5th-century UNESCO World Heritage site served as the fortress-palace of King Kashyapa, who sought refuge here after usurping the throne. Known as “Lion Rock,” it is a masterpiece of ancient urban planning, featuring sophisticated hydraulic engineering, symmetric water gardens, and the world-renowned “Cloud Maidens” frescoes. It remains a staggering testament to human ingenuity and royal ambition.
The nearest train station is in Habarana. Most visitors take a bus from Dambulla (24km away), which runs every 45 minutes directly to the site.
Private transfers from Kandy take about 2.5 hours. For a faster arrival, Cinnamon Air offers 30-minute domestic flights from Colombo directly to Sigiriya.
