The Mystical Forest Monastery of the North Central Plains
Rising abruptly from the dry North Central plains, Ritigala is the highest mountain in the northern half of Sri Lanka and home to a legendary 1st-century BC forest monastery. Shrouded in mist and local folklore—including Rama-Sita legends—this Strict Nature Reserve is far more than an archaeological site; it is a unique ecological island where wet-zone flora thrives amidst the dry zone. Unlike other ancient cities, Ritigala is devoid of grand stupas and statues, reflecting the austere “Pamsukulika” (rag-robe) monks who once meditated here. Today, its beautifully crafted stone paths, sunken courtyards, and ancient ritual baths lie silent under a thick jungle canopy, offering travelers a rare, contemplative atmosphere that feels like a scene from an explorer’s journal.
The turn-off is located at Ganewalpola on the Habarana-Anuradhapura (A11) road. It is roughly a 20-30 minute drive from Habarana or Sigiriya.
The closest rail access is Kekirawa Station or Horiwila Station. From there, you will need to hire a private vehicle or Tuk-Tuk for the remaining 15-20km journey to the forest gate.
