The Theater of “The Gathering”
Minneriya National Park is world-renowned for hosting one of the most spectacular wildlife events in Asia: “The Gathering.” During the dry season, hundreds of wild Asian elephants migrate to the receding shores of the ancient Minneriya Tank, a vast reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd Century AD. This 8,889-hectare sanctuary offers a diverse landscape of low-canopy forests, scrublands, and wetlands, providing a critical habitat not only for elephants but also for leopards, sloth bears, and an incredible array of endemic and migratory birds. It is the premier destination for safari enthusiasts looking to witness large herds in their natural, social environment.
Located on the Habarana-Polonnaruwa Road. It is easily accessible from Habarana (10 mins), Sigiriya (30 mins), or Dambulla (45 mins) via private vehicle or taxi.
Take the train from Colombo to Habarana Railway Station. From Habarana, it is a short 10-15 minute drive to the park entrance. Jeep safaris can be pre-arranged to pick you up from the station.
