Sri Lanka’s Most Isolated Traditional Village
Meemure is a village that feels as though it has been suspended in time. Hidden within the folds of the Knuckles Wilderness, it is arguably the most remote inhabited settlement in Sri Lanka. With a population of roughly 400 people, the village is defined by its stone-walled houses, emerald paddy fields, and the towering presence of Lakegala Mountain. For travelers, Meemure offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and experience traditional Kandyan rural life, crystal-clear natural pools, and rugged mountain trails that remain largely untouched by modernity.
The journey to Meemure is an adventure itself. The road from Hunnasgiriya is extremely narrow and rugged. A 4WD vehicle or a local “Meemure Bus” is essential. The 30km drive can take over 2 hours.
Take the train to Kandy Railway Station. From Kandy, hire a private vehicle to Hunnasgiriya, then switch to a local jeep or the village bus to reach Meemure.
