The Gateway to the Majestic Uva Highlands
Badulla is the historic capital of the Uva Province and serves as the final destination of Sri Lanka’s world-famous Main Line railway. Surrounded by the Namunukula mountain range and lush tea estates, it offers a more authentic, less commercialized alternative to the nearby tourist hub of Ella. The city is a fascinating blend of colonial heritage, sacred Buddhist sites, and breathtaking natural wonders. From the misty spray of Dunhinda Falls to the ancient stone carvings of its temples, Badulla provides a serene escape for travelers who wish to experience the quiet majesty of the hill country at a slower, more deliberate pace.
Badulla is well-connected via the A4 and A16 highways. Private vehicles or express buses from Colombo take approximately 5–7 hours. The drive through Beragala offers some of the best mountain vistas in the country.
The Main Line Railway is the most iconic way to arrive. The journey from Colombo takes 9–11 hours, crossing the Nine Arch Bridge and passing through some of the highest railway stations in the world.
