The Cradle of Sri Lankan Civilization
Anuradhapura is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and the sacred heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism. As the first capital of the ancient kingdom, this sprawling archaeological park features towering white stupas, massive monastic complexes, and intricately carved stone ruins. From the spiritual serenity of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi to the colossal scale of the Jetavanaramaya, the city offers a profound journey through 2,000 years of heritage and irrigation mastery.
The spiritual center of the city, this sacred fig tree is grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 288 BC, it is the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a documented history.
A marvel of ancient engineering, this massive white dome is one of the world’s tallest monuments. It is surrounded by a “Wall of Elephants” and serves as a major focal point for pilgrims from around the globe.
Once the third tallest structure in the ancient world, this brick stupa represents an incredible feat of construction. Its earthy, terracotta tones highlight the immense scale of the monastery that once housed thousands of monks.
A vast monastic center that was once a global hub for Buddhist learning. Within its grounds sits the Samadhi Buddha, a 4th-century granite statue widely considered the finest depiction of the Buddha in deep meditation.
Private vehicles or taxis from Colombo take approximately 3.5 to 4 hours via the A28 highway. It is the perfect starting point for exploring the “Cultural Triangle.”
The train from Colombo Fort takes about 4 hours. Express trains like the Yal Devi connect Colombo to the Anuradhapura Railway Station daily.
