The Star of the Northern Peninsula
Jaffna Fort stands as one of the most significant archaeological monuments in Sri Lanka, offering a silent yet powerful testimony to the island’s colonial past and recent history. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1618 and later expanded into a magnificent star-shaped bastion by the Dutch, the fort is the second-largest of its kind in the country. Spanning 55 acres of limestone and coral ramparts, it overlooks the serene Jaffna Lagoon. Having weathered centuries of colonial transitions and the scars of the civil war, the fort has undergone extensive restoration, inviting visitors to walk its historic walls and experience a unique blend of European military engineering and local Tamil heritage.
Jaffna is accessible via the A9 highway. Private vehicles or luxury inter-city buses from Colombo (Pettah) take roughly 6.5 to 8 hours. The fort is located in the heart of Jaffna town, easily reached by Tuk-Tuk.
The Yal Devi and other express trains from Colombo Fort offer a scenic 6–7 hour journey. The Jaffna Railway Station is just 1.5km from the fort entrance.
