Meemure

Sri Lanka’s Most Isolated Traditional Village

📍 District: Kandy | Province: Central
🗺️ Context: Tucked deep within the Knuckles Mountain Range, approximately 175km from Colombo.

Introduction

Meemure is a village that feels as though it has been suspended in time. Hidden within the folds of the Knuckles Wilderness, it is arguably the most remote inhabited settlement in Sri Lanka. With a population of roughly 400 people, the village is defined by its stone-walled houses, emerald paddy fields, and the towering presence of Lakegala Mountain. For travelers, Meemure offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and experience traditional Kandyan rural life, crystal-clear natural pools, and rugged mountain trails that remain largely untouched by modernity.

Top Attractions

  1. Lakegala Mountain: The iconic, pyramid-shaped peak that dominates the village skyline. It is a challenging climb for experienced trekkers and is steeped in legends of the mythical King Ravana.
  2. Natural Water Slides & Pools: The village is home to seven beautiful waterfalls. The “natural water slide” at a nearby stream is a popular spot for thrill-seekers to slide down smooth rock surfaces into deep pools.
  3. Sooriya Arana: A picturesque forest area made famous by Sri Lankan cinema, featuring a serene river and small waterfalls perfect for bathing.
  4. Traditional Stone Walls: Walk through the village to observe the unique fences made of stacked stones, a traditional method used to keep wild animals out of home gardens.
