The Land of Natural Lakes & Elusive Leopards
Wilpattu National Park is a wilderness of unparalleled beauty and historical significance, standing as the largest and oldest protected area in Sri Lanka. The park is world-renowned for its unique “willus”—natural, sand-rimmed water basins that fill with rainwater and serve as vital lifelines for the diverse wildlife. Unlike the busier parks in the south, Wilpattu offers a deep, immersive silence where the thrill of spotting a Sri Lankan leopard or a sloth bear feels truly wild and earned. Its dense dry-zone forests and open grasslands are not just a haven for big cats and elephants, but also hold the echoes of ancient history, with legends suggesting that Prince Vijaya, the founder of the Sinhalese nation, landed on its rugged coastal shores over 2,500 years ago.
The most direct route from Colombo is via the A3 highway through Puttalam, then joining the A12 (Puttalam-Anuradhapura road). The drive typically takes 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
The nearest major railway hub is Anuradhapura. Travelers can take an express train from Colombo Fort (approx. 3.5 – 4 hours) and then hire a private vehicle or Tuk-Tuk for the remaining 30km drive to the park entrance.
