The Land of the Gentle Giants
Udawalawe National Park is arguably the best place in Asia to witness wild elephants in their natural environment. Established in 1972 to protect wildlife displaced by the construction of the massive Udawalawe Reservoir, this 30,821-hectare park offers a landscape reminiscent of the African savanna—wide open grasslands dotted with teak forests and scrubland. Because of its sparse vegetation, wildlife sightings here are remarkably consistent compared to denser parks. While the 600-strong elephant population is the main draw, Udawalawe is also a sanctuary for water buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, and an incredible array of birds of prey, making it a must-visit for any wildlife enthusiast exploring the southern half of the island.
The most efficient route is via the Southern Expressway (E01), exiting at Welipenna or Mattala. Alternatively, the scenic inland route via Ratnapura (A4) offers a glimpse into the gem-mining heartlands of Sri Lanka.
There is no direct train station in Udawalawe. The nearest major station is Beliatta (Southern Line). From Beliatta, it is roughly a 1.5-hour drive by taxi or private vehicle to reach the park entrance.
